King & Byrne

King & Byrne create beautiful heartfelt renditions of songs we all love to hear, interspersed with lively instrumentals that will see people leave their seats and dance!

They perform music ranging from the Beatles to Bach, a Toccata morphing into a lively Spanish Malaguena, Abba, John Legend, Gipsy Kings, or old Latin favourites such as Besame Mucho. Be it Coldplay, Joni Mitchell or a light-hearted Flamenco version of Tom Jones’ Delilah, King & Byrne have something for everyone. The fusion of their different styles creates a sound unique to them that marries the warmth of their voices with the intricate and often astounding technical fireworks of two acoustic guitars.

Derek King

Derek is an accomplished singer-songwriter who can effortlessly engage with an audience, he has many years experience of performing in small and large venues, has released two critically acclaimed albums, “Sometimes” (2015) and “Seasons” (2016) and he’s currently working on a third.  His voice, both powerful and soulful conveys the emotion in a song, drawing the audience in, whilst Derek’s guitar accompaniments are expertly crafted and executed.

With songs about the ups and downs of life and love and the odd bit of topical content thrown in, Derek is very much a songwriter for today.

Having been a musical performer for most of his adult life, Derek’s musical journey began at the tender age of 16 when he played bass guitar in a post-punk “new-wave” band.  The band went on (without him!) to enjoy a respectable amount of success and a couple of top ten hits.  Having the wrong hairstyle for a new-wave band meant that Derek went in his own musical direction….

Derek has played in various bands before finding his niche as a singer-songwriter. His song “Perfect Days” was awarded a “Commended Entry” certificate in the 2012 UK Songwriting Contest and features on his “Seasons” album. He has had three finalist entries in the prestigious Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge: in 2013 with “Beautiful in Blue“, in 2014 with “To Be a Boy” (both of which appear on his “Sometimes” album), and his 2019 entry was “Lighthouse at the Beach”, which will feature on his next solo album due out soon.

A regular performer around Liverpool’s acoustic music scene for many years, Derek is also an enthusiastic promoter of local music and co-hosted regular events with Liverpool Acoustic over several years.

Derek is a fully qualified teacher and holds a doctorate and masters degree in International Education, and in his day job was a university lecturer and team leader for many years. He retired from academia recently to “follow the music” full-time, though he still teaches guitar on a freelance basis, and can also teach English as a foreign language.

Jenny Byrne

Jenny King (nee Byrne) is an accomplished concert guitarist born in St Helens near Liverpool.  She started learning classical guitar at the age of 10 and it soon became apparent that she had considerable talent.  She started to study with the renowned concert guitarist Neil Smith as a child.

At 15 she won a local young musician contest and continued her studies in Liverpool Music College, gaining a graduate diploma in Performance in 1983.  Jenny has since studied with many of the world’s leading guitarists, including Peter Katona of the world renowned Katona Twins and the Paraguayan maestra, Berta Rojas.

Jenny has given many successful concerts in the UK and abroad with her extensive classical and Spanish repertoire.  She is an experienced music teacher and has worked with various organisations to support and encourage aspiring guitarists.  She now focusses on arranging and composing for classical guitar in her own unique style.

Jenny has been performing as a solo classical/Spanish guitarist for many years and is renowned for her skill and innovative style, seamlessly fusing elements of Flamenco with the sweet romantic tones of the classical guitar. She has the ability to “wow” her audiences with arrangements of well-known film music and popular songs with a Spanish/Flamenco feel, displaying moments of sheer virtuosity.

Jenny now performs and works with her musician husband Derek King in a successful acoustic duo, King & Byrne, which combines Jenny’s skills as a Spanish guitarist with Derek’s steel strung guitar and vocals.

Jenny and Derek now live in Cheshire, mid-way between the amazing cities of Liverpool and Manchester.
